How To Apply Facial Oils & Oil Based Serums

We had such a wonderful response from you all yesterday on our most recent post to Instagram; Applying Oils To Damp Skin that we thought we would write a little more on the topic here, so you can get the most out of your favourite facial oils and oil based serums.

So, Why Apply Oils To Damp Skin?

A lot of people shy away from using oils on the skin (both the face and body) as they feel oils are too heavy and leave a greasy film that takes forever to absorb. This can also intensify as we age due to our skin loosing its ability to readily absorb oils, again leaving the skin feeling greasy, heavy and somewhat unpleasant. And although this can be true in some cases when applying heavier carrier oils and butters to the skin, this oily issue can be easily avoided ... all that is missing is a little bit of water.

You see, when you apply oils to damp skin you are essentially assisting in the oils ability to spread across the surface, thus preventing over application and stopping the skin from becoming overloaded. It also feels incredible to apply oils in this way.

Pro tip: avoid applying oil to skin that is dripping wet as this will most likely dilute the product before all of the goodness is able to penetrate.

Water Acts As A Carrier

Simply leave the skin damp after cleansing or apply a water based product such as a mist or toner, prior to applying your facial oil. The water left on the skin or from the toner mist will act as a carrier; helping to assist the spreadability of the facial oil, whilst simultaneously improving absorption.

Occlusives And Choosing the Right One

Furthermore, when an oil based serum is applied to damp skin or over the top of a water based mist or toner you are essentially helping to seal in that moisture for a longer period of time. Look for oil based serums and facial oils that contain semi-occlusive oils which help to prevent water from evaporating from the skin. Oils including argan oil, jojoba oil and safflower oil are all semi-occlusive in nature as well as non-comedognic, which means they will not clog your pores, nor compromise acne-prone skins. Hurrah!!!
